Thomas Greelis came to the United States as a child, with his parents, from Chonfert Parish, Galway Ireland in 1838. They settled in Troy, New York.   Thomas worked in the Waterleit Arsenal at Troy, NY during the Mexican War 1846-48.  Thomas married Margaret Ann Hart May 11, 1858 at Troy New York where they made their home.  The 1860 census listed Thomas Greelis as owning real estate valued at $300 and having a personal estate of $100.

Margaret Hart was the daughter of Michael and Maria Hart.  She was born in Ballymote, County Sligo Ireland on October 15, 1838 and came to America with her brothers, Henry and John in December 1847.  They joined their mother and their other three siblings in Albany, NY who had come over to America in 1846.

Eleven days after the firing in Fort Sumpter, S.C. (April 12, 1861), Thomas was back working for the Government making cartridges (bucking ball cartridges).  After the war, Thomas and Margaret moved to Traer, Iowa where he started his own coal and wood business.  He was a member of the city council and organizer of the fire department.  He was fire chief there for ten years.

He retired from the coal and wood business in 1905 and they moved to a new home at 52 Franklin Street, Waterloo, Iowa.  Thomas and Margaret celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on May 11, 1908.  There were eight children.  However, two died as infants.  Thomas died at the age of 75 and Margaret at the age of 81.  They are buried in Calvary cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa.
