MCCARTY, John R a former Santa Barbara resident
of 60 years,, passed away March 30, 2000, in San Diego. He was born on
August 8, 1928, in Perry, Iowa, to Geraldine Greelis and Francis
McCarty, also long-time Santa Barbara residents. Upon his
graduation in 1946 from Bishop Garcia Diego, formerly Catholic High
School of Santa Barbara, he joined the US Army. After his
discharge, he attended St. Mary's College and the University of
Michigan.
Mr. McCarty was a decorated combat veteran of
the Korean War and was a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and the
Arizona Republic. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law
Brian and Karin McCarty and grandson Connor McCarty, of San Diego; son
and daughter-in-law Kevin and Jennifer Puppe and granddaughters Courtney
and Genevieve Puppe, of Austin, TX; sister and brother-in-law Patricia
and Brooks VanHouten and niece Cathy German of Placentia; brother Father
Kieran McCarty, who will officiate at the memorial service, of Santa
Barbara; and numerous cousins. Mr McCarty was preceded in death by
another son, Ronald Puppe, in 1977; ex-wife Nancy LeGrand McCarty in
1996; and log time companion Patricia Redfield in 1995. Donations may be
made to Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon Family Groups. A Memorial
Service will be held Friday, April 14, 2000, at 10:00 am in the Santa
Barbara Mission Chapel.
